Health and Nutrition

Parents/carers are required to provide
a packed lunch for their child and an
ice pack should be included in their
lunch box. The nursery provides a
morning and afternoon snack each day
and we ask that you include an extra
piece of fruit to be cut up and shared
at snack times. We offer a healthy
choice of fruit , cheese, crackers, etc.
and of course any baking that the
children have made that day.
Drinks of milk and water are provided at snack time.

Mealtimes are relaxed , social occasions when children sit down together around the table to
enjoy their food and each other’s company.

If your child has any special dietary requirements, preferences/ intolerances/ religious/ cultural
please feel free to discuss this with us.

Cooking and tasting experiences form part of our early childhood curriculum.

Opportunities are provided for rest or a sleep when required. Please feel free to discuss this
with the staff.

Opportunities are also provided for active play throughout the day. We have enlisted various
organisations expertise in providing opportunities for ‘active play’, these include – Infectious
Grooves (drums and rhythm), Scottish Football Association (ball skills), Yoga Bugs, Musical
Minis.

Your child will be required to bring along a change of clothing(in case of accidents) and those
children who are not toilet trained will require nappies, wipes and nappy sacks.

Please remember to clearly name all your child’s belongings, this includes shoes and coats.

Arrangements when children are ill

The Village nursery cannot undertake the care of sick children. The nursery must be informed of
any child illnesses, sickness or problems before attempting to bring the child to the premises,
each case can then be considered strictly on an individual basis.

In the interests of other children and staff it will be necessary to exclude any child who has
been diagnosed with certain contagious illnesses and diseases. This exclusion will remain in
force until the condition has been cleared by the child’s doctor. The current list of illnesses
includes: chickenpox, mumps,rubella, measles etc.

All cases of gastroenteritis should be regarded as infectious. Children must be kept at home
until diarrhoea and vomiting has cleared for twenty four hours.

If a child becomes ill or unduly distressed during nursery hours, one or other of the parents will
normally be informed by telephone. After discussion, it may be decided that it is necessary for
the child to be collected earlier than normal.

Policy for the Administration of Medicines

The Village Nursery Staff will only administer medicines to children if they are prescribed by a
medical doctor.

In an EMERGENCY or URGENT SITUATION eg. A child whose high temperature has not been
sufficiently reduced by natural methods (ensure the room is well ventilated, remove heavy
clothing, sponge with tepid water), the Nursery Manager, Assistant manager or nominated
person in charge will contact the parent/guardian to ask them to collect the child and, if
necessary, ask for permission to administer Calpol. The time of the call will be recorded on the
medical consent form and parents asked to sign the form when they collect the child.
